The Hague-based painter Ed van der Kooy uses his adventurous travels through Asia as a theme for his colorful paintings. He is particularly strongly influenced by the culture of the mountain state of Nepal, where he has visited almost annually since 1978. Here, the painter received the honorable commission from the then Nepalese King Mahendra to paint his daughter. In addition to the direct depiction of people he meets during his travels, Ed van der Kooy portrays Westerners surrounded by an entirely different, Eastern culture. With great attention to detail, he shows the alienation, which appears strongly dramatic and theatrical. He finds his models within his circle of friends. Sometimes, colleagues are happy to play a role in his paintings. The beautiful Eastern garments, in particular, bear witness to his precise working method and the many hours of labor he devotes to each canvas.
