This object is antique earthenware from the famous French factory Faïencerie de Gien, decorated in the classic Renaissance motif. The decoration on the lid is inspired by Italian Renaissance majolica and features mythological creatures (such as chimeras or sea monsters) and stylized birds in ochre, blue, and green tones on a white background. The knob on the lid is shaped like a fruit with leaves.
The monogram on the bottom shows the intertwined letters "Gien". This specific stamp was used by the factory in the period from the last quarter of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century (roughly between 1875 and 1910).

Faïencerie de Gien, founded in 1821 by the Englishman Thomas Hall, gained worldwide fame by imitating and perfecting historical ceramic styles. The iconic Renaissance decoration was introduced in the mid-19th century. It is directly inspired by 16th-century Italian majolica (tin-glazed earthenware) from famous pottery centers such as Urbino, Faenza, and Deruta. The decoration on the lid, featuring chimeras (mythological creatures), stylized birds, and refined leafy tendrils, is typical of this style. Gien produced this motif on both a white background, as in this case, and on a deep cobalt blue background, known as "Renaissance Fond Bleu".
