Geert Geerligs was always working, in his studio in De Oude School in Kortenhoef or on his boat. He loved the Kortenhoef and Loosdrecht lake district, the Vecht from Utrecht to Muiden, and the boats sailing on the water. In the summers, he could often be found in Spain and the South of France. He would work in the vicinity of Alicante, Finistrat, Figueras, Cadaqués, Gerona, Barcelona, Moraira, and Agde. There, too, he felt drawn to the water. He visited the fishing villages in particular. The Spanish fishing towns, with their boats in the harbor, sometimes beached on the shore, and the steep paths leading upwards, exude the atmosphere of a warm summer day. He also captured the beach with its beachgoers. In addition, he was an excellent portrait painter and had a keen eye for still lifes.

Geert Geerligs was born in Bussum. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and was in the same class as the future Cobra painters. He was a member of the Gooise artists' association Laren-Blaricum and “De Kring”. His work was regularly exhibited at Kunstzaal Hamdorff in Laren.


With a fluid, impressionistic touch, he captured numerous subjects—partly in watercolor—with a keen sense of color. Working from his boat or his smaller rowboat, he viewed the world from below. Many of his maritime depictions are created from this frog's-eye perspective. The inland vessels are moored to a mooring post or a bollard. The pleasure yachts with people enjoying themselves on board did not escape his eye either. Nor did the beachgoers in Loosdrecht or on the Spanish coast. In addition, he painted beautiful still lifes and created magnificent (nude) drawings. His oil paintings possess great depth, built up from a multitude of colors. Anyone who looks closely will discover something new time and again in the work of Geert Geerligs. A figure on the quay, a fisherman in a small boat, or a walker in a mountain town. Geert Geerligs makes his colors dance.
