Jurgen (George) Pletser (1871-1942) studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. He was known as a stubborn artist and a "loner". Pletser mainly painted still lifes, but also made figure pieces and landscapes. He worked in a progressive, powerful style for the time, often in a daring color scheme. His paintings are often dark, but due to the contrasting light and shadow effect, there are always colors that stand out.
In addition to Rotterdam and the surrounding area, he also worked in Paris and Berlin.
His work hangs in the Boymans van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam and in the Royal Collections, Lange Voorhout Palace in The Hague.
