Ger Lataster - oil on canvas | 'Untitled' | 2000

An extremely powerful, dynamic, and museum-worthy original oil painting by the internationally renowned Dutch artist Ger Lataster. Lataster belongs to the absolute top of post-war Dutch abstract expressionism (the 'Amsterdam Limburgers'). This significant late work from the year 2000 reflects his undiminished vitality, bravura, and painterly mastery.

The painting depicts an explosive and very thickly applied still life, in which the boundary between figuration (fruit forms) and pure lyrical abstraction completely blurs. The paint is applied to the canvas with thick, energetic strokes and a rich, warm, earthy palette. The work possesses a heavy, tangible texture and a deep emotional layering that are so typical of his compelling, material-like style.

While Ger Lataster's work is known for often being monumental and enormous in size—canvases for which there is simply no room in a standard interior—this is a rare exception. This particular painting has a more compact and extremely manageable format. Such manageable works by Lataster rarely come onto the market. It is a unique opportunity for the connoisseur: a painting with the monumental power and heavy impasto of his large museum pieces, but with a size for which there is a nice spot on the wall in any home or office.

This painting was created in an extremely successful and celebrated anniversary year for Lataster. In 2000, the artist reached the respected age of 80, which was honored nationwide with various major exhibitions and museum retrospectives:

- Museum van Bommel van Dam (Venlo) | Organized the festive solo retrospective "The Power of Music" in 2000, in which his recent, vital works took center stage. In terms of theme, expression, and dynamics, this painting aligns seamlessly with the masterpieces shown here.

- Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam | In exactly the same period (2000/2001), Lataster participated by invitation in the high-profile exhibition "De Voorstelling", where then-Queen Beatrix acted as guest curator.

- Galerie Nouvelles Images (The Hague) | Showed a large-scale retrospective of his most important paintings from the period 1956–2000 around the turn of the century

Works from this specific peak year carry the artistic charge of a painter at the absolute peak of his creative reflection and are highly sought after by collectors of top Dutch art.
