Gerardus Hermanus Johannes Sluijter (name variant Ger Sluyter), Amsterdam 1901–1985, was an artist of great renown within a relatively small circle, a well-known figure in the local art world. Largely self-taught, he went his own way. He wrote a book on printmaking and regularly published articles in Amsterdam art magazines. His work was frequently exhibited at the time and is included in various collections. Gerard Sluijter, born Amsterdam 1901–1985, was an Amsterdam painter. He grew up in the Jordaan district. He entered the Academy at the age of 19. He continued his education independently. He was a member of “the Independents.” He had contacts with Henk Henriët, Kees Verwey, Karel Appel, Erich Wichman, Wolvekamp, Sierhuis, Lucebert, Jan Mulder, and Jan Peeters. He exhibited at Carel van Lier and the Stedelijk Museum. A large part of this important Amsterdam artist's collection went up in flames during a major fire in the building where the collection was stored.
