Gerda Smit (geboren in Utrecht 1934 – overleden in Eindhoven 2004) herken je snel. Haar geheel eigen directe stijl heeft ze zich vrij snel eigen gemaakt en is ze altijd trouw gebleven. Na jaren in het kleuteronderwijs gewerkt te hebben koos ze voor een opleiding aan de kunstacademie om graficus te worden. Ruim 18 jaar schiep ze mensen, kinderen, dieren en situaties die heel dicht op je huid komen. Je gaat bijna als van zelf van haar etsen houden: de (geraffineerde) eenvoud, de kleuren die lijken te leven en de invoelbaarheid van de afbeelding. Haar werk heeft iets ‘hemels’, kent een bepaalde lichtheid: kinderen veranderen in engelen, handen veranderen in vleugels en het leven komt los van de grond.
Net als haar dochter en graficus Marjan Smit heeft ze vele zondagen op de kunstmarkt op het Spui in Amsterdam gestaan.
Helaas is er weinig over het werk van Gerda Smit gepubliceerd, maar het belangrijkste boekje is ‘Gerda Smit Prentenboek’. Veel van haar etswerk en haar schilderijen zijn in dit boekje te bekijken.
