Beautiful classic medal by Han Wezelaar.

Published in 1940 by the Association for Medal Art.

The obverse displays in great detail the stocky likeness of the regent and poet Philips van Marnix van St. Aldegonde (1539-1598) in three-quarter view, with curly hair and a fur coat, based on the portrait from the Fodor Museum in Amsterdam. As is often seen in late 16th-century portraits, the proportion of head to shoulders is obscured by the heavy collar. The reverse is modeled after a 1598 portrait by Jacob de Gheyn of the sheet drawn by Marnix himself, found in the Album Amicorum of Jan van der Does, preserved in the Rijksmuseum. The drawing depicts a ship in the surf, battered by the winds. Rocks border the sea on the horizon, and a dolphin swims to the side of the ship. The whole is illuminated by sunbeams and stars, between which a Christogram and, above it, the name of God, appear in Greek and Hebrew respectively. The medal bears the motto of Marnix van St. Aldegonde on a banner: 'Repos ailleurs'. Rest is elsewhere, namely: in the afterlife. The medal was issued in collaboration with the National Committee commemorating the birthday of Marnix van St. Aldegonde. Wezelaar, who was largely trained in Paris, ranks among the greatest sculptors of his generation, along with Andriessen and Van Pallandt. It is a pity that his exceptional qualities are not evident in this rather conventional medal. The genre did not suit him; he made only a few, encouraged in doing so after the war primarily by Essen (source VVPK).
