Hans Landsaat (1935–2026) – Hills and Shadows 3 & 9 – 1990

Two original, hand-signed screen prints – 9/50. A special duo from Dutch modern printmaking: two original, hand-signed screen prints by Hans Landsaat from his characteristic series Hills / Shadows (1990). Both works are numbered 9/50 and are in perfect condition.
A special opportunity to acquire two matching, original screen prints by Hans Landsaat from the series Hills and Shadows , which is also represented in the collection of the Rijksmuseum (Hills and Shadows 6).

The artworks
These two compositions strikingly demonstrate how Hans Landsaat manages to achieve maximum expressiveness with a minimum of visual means. The first work shows two stylized, triangular hill forms, constructed from powerful black lines, with striking red accents. The subtle grey shadows create a surprising sense of depth and spatiality. The larger red area at the bottom provides an exciting contrast and gives the composition a playful, almost architectural character.
The second work has a more organic appearance. Three superimposed abstract forms, executed in predominantly deep black with subtle red and grey accents, evoke associations with ridges, landscape contours, and shadows. The combination of strict geometry and free, expressive lines is characteristic of Landsaat's visual language. The generous white background gives the forms ample space and reinforces the balance, tranquility, and graphic power of both compositions.

The complete series – Hills / Shadows (1990)
The works are part of Hills / Shadows, a remarkable graphic series from 1990 consisting of nine different screen prints, originally brought together in a single cover. The complete series constitutes an exploration of landscape, abstraction, light, and shadow. Landsaat translates recognizable landscape elements into a personal world of lines, planes, and forms. Each print has its own character, but together the nine works form a coherent artistic whole. It is noteworthy that the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam also holds work from this series in its collection. This underscores the art-historical relevance of Landsaat's graphic oeuvre.

About Hans Landsaat
Hans Landsaat (1935–2026) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and printmaker, born in Amsterdam. He trained at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam, the predecessor of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Throughout his long career, Landsaat developed a recognizable, distinctive visual language in which landscapes, geometric structures, and abstract forms take center stage. His work is characterized by a subtle balance between simplicity and expressiveness. With limited means, he managed to create compositions that are simultaneously playful, powerful, and serene. Nature and the landscape were important sources of inspiration. His travels, including to Australia, contributed to his interest in spatiality and the abstract translation of landscape forms.
