After his birthplace, Rotterdam, was largely destroyed by the bombing of 1940, Harry Lips moved to Maastricht. Together with two Rotterdam friends, Henk Sitskoorn and Jan Vink, he moved into a studio there. He built his life there, painting the city, the people, his studio, his family, and himself, while also working on commissions. In Maastricht, Harry came into contact with the local artists. He was influenced to some extent by Charles Eyck, whom he admired and continued to follow. Harry's use of color became lighter and his painting style more direct, especially in his landscapes. In Rotterdam, he met the artist Kees van Dongen in 1949. Traces of Van Dongen's later work can be found in portraits of Harry Lips. In the 1950s, he regularly traveled to Provence in the south of France to paint the landscape. In Spain, he painted the life of fishermen; the water and the boats continued to fascinate the Rotterdam-born painter. Later, travels followed to Egypt and the Spanish desert region of Abanilla, among other places. His entire oeuvre bears witness to a passion for painting. He captures his intense experience of light and dark, of color and form, through his paintings.
