In 1996, Maarten 't Hart used Fortuin's painting “Wintergezicht op Maassluis” for the cover of the book *De nakomer*. Fortuin was an introverted man who felt that his art did not receive the appreciation it deserved. He could hardly part with his work. He was reluctant to part with a painting even to family and friends, and if he did sell something, it was a copy of the original. Shortly before his death, this changed, and he allowed his work to be offered for sale in a local gallery. In a short time, nearly thirty works were sold. He was also appointed an honorary citizen of the city of Maassluis. For him, this was the recognition he had missed for so long. In 2011, the NCRV broadcast "De nalatenschap van Oom Hein" (Uncle Hein's Legacy). This documentary is about clearing out his chaotic house after he had passed away. During the cleanup, artworks came to light that the family was completely unaware of.[1] In late 2016 – early 2017, an exhibition of work by Henk Fortuin took place at Museum Maassluis to mark the centenary of his birth.
