We proudly offer this rare and absolute masterpiece by Herman Brood (1946–2001), titled "Pharmacie Oxygene".
This unique artwork has recently been fully examined and officially designated as an authentic masterpiece by the Vals Brood Foundation. An absolute bargain for the serious Brood collector.
This impressive painting on canvas functions as a raw, visual diary and is structured as an intriguing storyboard. It tells a powerful, autobiographical-sounding story centering on a total of seven characters. Among the characters is the iconic American musician and close friend of Brood: Willy DeVille. The composition further depicts a dynamic and typical 'Brood scene': two women (one with a thumb in her mouth and the other injecting herself with a syringe), a man sitting at a desk with a telephone and screen, a figure with a bullet belt, and a menacing scene in which someone is being held at gunpoint with a small dog underneath, likely Iggy (named after Iggy Pop), Herman's own dog.
For this work, Brood employed a rare, layered mixed media consisting of paint, marker, and spray paint. In contrast to his later, highly colorful primary works, this particular piece stands out for its restrained and raw palette: it is austere in composition, with subtle, faded red color accents in the characters' clothing. The signature is monumental and uniquely applied with spray paint: first in bright yellow, after which Brood sprayed his surname over it again in black.
This painting represents the pure, authentic essence of Herman Brood's turbulent life and artistry. A museum-worthy piece!
The work is delivered including the certificate of authenticity issued by Stichting ValsBrood. Please see the photos for this.
