- Biography: Jaap Kraanen
- Jaap Kraanen, a Rotterdam graphic artist and painter, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. He was a co-founder of the Rotterdam ARA Group, one of the groups in which graphic artists united after the war. The artists believed that graphic art was the best way to bring good art to the general public, because the thousandth print of a lithograph was as valuable as the first. After the war, Kraanen captured the reconstruction of Rotterdam in his work. Initially, he worked figuratively, but later adopted an abstract style with a lively interplay of lines. Kraanen found his subjects in the city, but also in nature. He often worked in black and white. His work is represented in the collections of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Schiedam, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. A selection from the literature about Jaap Kraanen: M. Kraanen, Jaap Kraanen: graphics, drawings, watercolours, Schiedam 2004 D. Welling
