Hands, brush, an explosion.
Jacob Kanbier (1949–2020) did not paint — he unleashed. 'I work at the peak of my feelings,' he said himself: mind switched off, paint in an explosion with hands and brush. Largely self-taught, with Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat as major examples. In 1987, Kanbier took the stage at Boulevard of Broken Dreams in Amsterdam, alongside Herman Brood, Jules Deelder, and Simon Vinkenoog — the same generation that blurred the boundaries between art, music, and poetry. Two years later, he presented his own Neosymbolism Manifesto at the Stedelijk Museum. Man with Bible shows that energy in every brushstroke: a penetrating gaze, a simple cross on the skin, religious symbolism alongside raw, earthy expression. This work is 1 of a series of 6, exclusively at Art-Deal.
