The front of this beautifully framed painting is one of the few still lifes by the Bergen-op-Zoom painter Jan Baartmans (1898 - 1968).
The Francophile Baartmans moved between Impressionism and Expressionism. This expressionist work seems based on the Irises of Vincent van Gogh, with whom Baartmans strongly identified. Like Van Gogh, Baartmans led a rather unfortunate life and suffered from the lack of recognition for his work.
On the reverse side, a colorful landscape can be seen, possibly created in France during one of his frequent stays there. As with much of Baartmans' work, the dating is unknown, but it is likely from before 1944.
The interesting thing about this painting is that Baartmans' mood swings can be recognized in the difference between the expressionistic front and the impressionistic back of this work.
In 1992, a retrospective exhibition of Jan Baartmans took place at Het Markiezenhof in Bergen op Zoom. The catalogue of this exhibition, with a description of his life, is included.
