Johannes Jacobus van der Stap (1874–1940) | Canal View in Delft
Dutch School | Oil on board |
A warm, expressive view of
Delft, with a stone bridge crossing a quiet canal, traditional façades lining
the water, and trees shading the neighbouring pavement.
Small figures suggest everyday life, while
broken reflections bring movement to the canal’s surface.
Van der Stap builds the
scene with broad, lively brushwork and a rich palette of ochre, terracotta,
olive green and deep brown. Pale accents along the bridge railings and
buildings catch the light, balancing the darker water beneath the arch. The
close viewpoint gives this modest city scene an intimate, familiar character. Presented in a broad
moulded frame with an aged gold finish, dark outer edge and contrasting inner
slip, complementing the painting’s warm tones. Condition: Excellent condition
