About the work
This painting is a representative example of Jan Jongschaap's artistic vision and painting style. It is painted in the style of abstract expressionism, characterized by powerful brushstrokes and a dynamic composition. Typical of Jongschaap's work is the very lively and colorful palette. Although the work is fundamentally abstract, it aligns with his habit of using suggestive elements. Through the rhythmic construction of the color planes and lines, the viewer can—depending on the interpretation—discover landscape elements, architectural forms, or a fragmented figure within it.
About the painter Jan Jongschaap (1932 - 1996)
Jongschaap was born in Dordrecht in 1932 and also worked there for part of his life. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. From 1969 onwards, he lived and worked in Zierikzee. He worked primarily abstractly, but in such a way that you feel you can recognize all sorts of things in his work. Most of his work is very colorful, as is this painting.
He was known for working under the motto "Painting in complete freedom"
