Taken from the famous emblem book "The Unworthy World" (first edition of 1710), two original copper engravings with poems.
In "De Beeldendienst" Jan Luyken criticizes the human tendency to attach value to outward display and worldly icons, which he sees as an obstacle to true piety.
"The Way to Heaven" shows precisely the active choice for the narrow, virtuous path to eternity.
Jan Luyken (1649–1712) was an Amsterdam master etcher and poet. He became famous for his fabulously detailed copper engravings in which he connected daily life to Christian morality and spirituality.
