Before 1944, Jan Michels painted with his childhood friends—including Harrie Pardoel, Sjef van der Voort, Harry Maas, and Karel Vermeeren—in the attic of Harry Maas's house on Akkerstraat. This led to the formation of a group of young artists, which became the Eindhoven Sketch Club around 1944. In the 1950s, Jan Michels also started his own advertising agency, "Avanti," in Eindhoven. There, Jan Michels (together with Harrie Pardoel) worked on projects for the Efteling with Anton Pieck. (The flying carpet with the fakir, the fairytale figures pointing to the toilets, and the geese are a few examples of this.)
