Origin from the artist's collection

Jan Oosterman and his wife, Anne Oosterman-Weijtjens, settled in Rousset-les-Vignes, a 15th-century village in the south of France, in 1976.
The thin porcelain sheets he made there in the eighties were a continuation and culmination of his earlier work from the seventies: the painted 'booklets' and 'sheets', inspired by the poetry of Bert Schierbeek.

For this porcelain plate, Oosterman found inspiration in the historical novel Montaillou by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie. This book tells the story of the medieval persecution of heretics in southern France. The inhabitants of the mountain village, the shepherds with their flocks, and their simple homes recur in the images on his plates.

The porcelain sheet offered here was exhibited at the exhibition "Jan Oosterman 75: Recent Porcelain Sheets," held at the Galerie Amphora in Oosterbeek in March 1986.
The catalogue of this exhibition is attached.
