Jan Simon Knikker junior, oil on panel
"Montelbaan Tower" Amsterdam
Jan Simon Knikker Jr. was born in Leiden in 1911 into an artistic family and developed a passion for painting at an early age. After his training in The Hague, he grew into a gifted painter of landscapes and cityscapes, in the tradition of the Hague School.
His work is characterized by calm compositions, soft colors, and a subtle interplay of light and atmosphere. Knikker preferred working by natural daylight, which he considered essential for the right appearance of his paintings.
He was known as a modest and dedicated artist. His work was appreciated both at home and abroad and is still loved for its recognizable, serene Dutch atmosphere.
