Jan Theuns - Portrait of an old man with a beard

Jan Theuns (1977-1961). Portrait of an Old Man. Rembrandtesque. Signed. Dimensions including frame 78 × 70 cm. The painting is in good condition with signs of age. The authentic frame has damage in several places (see photos). Please note: this is a heavy artwork (8-9 kilos). A particularly beautiful and characterful painting by Jan Theuns, depicting a dignified old man with an imposing silver-white beard, executed in a classical, Rembrandtesque painting style. The work demonstrates a strong sense of composition, lighting, and character expression. The sitter is depicted in three-quarter profile. His striking facial features, wavy white hair, and full beard are painted with great attention to detail and nuance. The man wears a deep red robe with a richly decorated, gold-colored shoulder piece. Particularly striking is the application of chiaroscuro, the powerful contrast between light and dark that is so characteristic of the Dutch painting tradition. The warm light accentuates the forehead, facial features, and silver-white beard, while the dark background brings the figure forward in an impressive manner. The visible brushwork and subtle transitions between light and shadow give the painting a lively, almost tangible appearance. The composition and treatment of light are reminiscent of the tradition of Rembrandt and his followers.
