Presumably based on the work by Max Ernst, "Où naissent les cardinaux" (Where the Cardinals Are Born)
Joannes Franciscus, or Jan Uriot, always worked as a visual artist, initially as a silversmith. From 1936 to 1939, he trained as a painter under the Gooi artist Is. Naarden. As a mobilized soldier, Jan Uriot experienced the horrors of war in 1940. These experiences had a profound influence on him. From 1948 onwards, he devoted himself primarily to painting portraits of children. Later, he painted many cloudscapes, in which he managed to achieve a high degree of perfection. In the 1960s, after many years, Uriot came to terms with himself and processed his war experiences. Among these were 'Exodus', the story of man (a portfolio with 24 prints, 1962) and, above all, the illustrations for the first two cantos of Dante's 'Divina Commedia'. These tempera paintings were published in 1975 in a very fine edition (in a limited run) by the Italian master printer Antonio Fiorini. In 1976, Jan Uriot moved from Blaricum to St. Janstraat in Middelburg with his wife and daughter Barbara. Here he rediscovered the peace to work as he had previously managed to do in Blaricum, before it transformed from an artists' village into a television village.
