Jelle de Vries' paintings are landscape in character, but not in the traditional sense of a landscape designed by human hands. What he paints are landscapes in the making, land that still needs to be created and is constantly changing in shape and structure. And you see this at the border between land and water along the coast and in particular at our Wadden Sea. In his work you will rarely find a horizon that is so characteristic of the coast, but you will find a different line, namely the high tide line and the coastline. He is inspired by what he sees in the vertical plane. Another characteristic of his work is the thick structure, created by a thick paste that includes mud from the Wadden Sea or sand/shells, etc.
