Joseph Cals (Stein, 1949) is a Dutch painter and sculptor. In his art, he approaches the past from various angles. Joseph Cals seeks formulations regarding the meaning of the present and the past. There is a strong affinity with primal images from primitive cultures, with Stonehenge, prehistoric rock carvings, relics from a distant past, and other archaeological traditions that, although affected by the ravages of time, have nevertheless survived for centuries. Joseph's paintings, sculptures, and reliefs cherish life, much like Mediterranean sunlight caresses the pale stucco of a wall. Joseph Cals' art can be sensual and gentle, but also esoteric and unfathomable.
