Note: James Joseph Kearns 'James Kearns': An outstanding modern American sculptor, painter, and graphic artist, James Kearns studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, DePaul University, and the University of Chicago from 1946 to 1951. Kearn's first one-man exhibition took place in New York City in 1956, and since then his sculptures, paintings, lithographs and etchings have been featured in exhibitions at the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Whitney Museum in New York. In 2006, the Rider University Art Gallery, Lawrenceville, New Jersey held an exhibition featuring a retrospective of Fifty-Plus Years of James Kearn's drawings and paintings. He has also illustrated a number of important books, including: Can These Bones Live (1960) and The Heart of Beethoven (1962). Leaping is a beautiful original example of Kearns' lithographic art. Kearns has created a haunting and powerful image here with dominant shapes and lines. Leaping was commissioned by the Associated Artists of New York in a limited edition of 100 impressions. Since its inception in the mid-1930s, the AAA has commissioned original graphic art from great masters such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, and others. During the 1960s, the main artists who collaborated included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies and James Joseph Kearns. Kearns has delivered several lithographs and an etching to this publisher in this decade.
