Descriptive and stylistic analysis:
The artwork depicts a close, almost symbiotic relationship, presumably between a mother (or older sister) and her young daughter, gathered around a picture book. The little girl with curly blond hair sits on the lap of the woman with short, brown hair, a symbol of 1930s fashion. Their gazes, both fixed on the book, create a powerful psychological dynamic and a protective atmosphere.

In the background, a subtle mise en abyme shows a still life (a vase of flowers and a teapot), a genre in which Léon Devos particularly excelled.
