Biography Lia van Leeuwen (Waddinxveen, 1954) I live in South Rotterdam and have a home studio. Since 1987, I have primarily etched, and I have always done so with great pleasure. For several years now, I have been working mainly with oil paint. Oil paint on canvas. With my etchings, I told stories, symbolically. Each little figure represented something. I bundled these symbols into a deck of cards: reflection cards. My symbols have very gradually disappeared from my visual work. They have shifted increasingly to the background; background became foreground, and now I work with color. For me, color represents feeling. My paintings are about feeling, space, involvement, freedom, warmth... Lia van Leeuwen's etchings are characterized by a very personal use of color. They are all more or less colored in, often with pigments that she seeks out herself (red earth) or buys during her travels, such as Tuscany. The result is that the image takes on a very natural atmosphere. The work takes on the character of being closely connected to the earth. Stylistically, this earthiness is also noticeable. She discovered that when scratching lines into a zinc plate, every line turned out differently. The lines transformed into shapes and figures. In this way, a unique visual language emerged that continues to develop and reveals a very playful and lively world. This playful, poetic, and slightly humorous quality in her work is reminiscent of Paul Klee. Over the years, she has developed her own printing method. This involves both what is etched or scratched into the plate (intaglio) and the colors she applies with a roller (relief). This means that every sheet can be just slightly different. Every etching is therefore unique.
