Beautiful bronze medal by medallist Maarten Pauw.

Published in 1953 by the Association for Medal Art.

A free commission to the medallist Pauw, who was employed by the medal factory of CJ Begeer in Utrecht. He chose a portrait of the Communist-Socialist poet, writer, and politician Henriette Roland Holst-van der Schalk (1869-1952), which he sculpted based on a drawing by her husband, the painter and 'community artist' RN Roland Holst. Henriette Roland Holst's poems are no longer read, but her political influence was significant; she was a Marxist theorist, a 'founding mother' of the Comintern, and had close contact with Lenin, Trotsky, Rosa Luxemburg, and countless other political and literary figures of her time. She was a spiritual example for many, even when she was no longer a communist but propagated an ethical-religious socialism. The powerful portrait depicts the poetess sharply drawn in middle age. The reverse side—where her year of birth is indicated a year too late—depicts Pegasus, the poetic inspiration, and the dove, the symbol of peace. Surrounding this is the idealistic text in which Roland Holst firmly believed: 'The gentle forces will surely win in the end'. (source VVPK)
