Map Grothusen-Musch, sculptor Born in Amsterdam 1914-2000
Map Musch received her training in Epsom, England, at the School of Art and under sculptor Johan Limpers. She exhibited in Amsterdam at Ina Broers and at Sphinx, among others, and created a tabernacle for the chapel of the St. Lucas Hospital. In the Municipality of Duiven, there is a three-part outdoor plastic featuring a horse, dog, and child figure by her.
Provenance: Private collection of the artist. Heavy white marble base plate, 5 cm thick.
Her work, consisting of child figures, horses, golfers, and dancers, is naturalistic and displays a very sensitive expression of controlled movement.
In sculptural material, bronze, the sculptures acquire an extra relief. In principle, her work is not for sale.

BRONZE; An alloy of copper with other metals (especially tin) that has been used since antiquity. When casting bronze, the artist usually employs the lost-wax technique, which is more than 5,000 years old. It is the best, but also the most complex method for producing sculptures. First, the artist forms a model of his sculpture. It is embedded in a liquid silicone rubber compound. Once the material has solidified, the model is cut out. The liquid wax is poured into the negative mold.
After cooling, the wax casting is removed from the mold, fitted with braces, and dipped into ceramic mass. The ceramic mass is hardened in an oven, and the wax flows out (lost mold). Now we finally have the negative mold, into which the molten bronze, hot at 1400 degrees Celsius, is poured.
After the bronze has cooled, the ceramic shell is broken off and the sculpture comes to light. Now the casings are removed, and the surfaces are polished, patinated, and numbered by the artist himself or, according to his specifications, by a specialist.
In this way, every casting becomes an original work. For lower-quality bronze castings, the sand casting method is often used; however, in terms of surface properties and quality, it does not achieve the results of the more complex lost-wax technique.
