A work of Expressive Realism - Rendezvous - by the artist Martin Wollmer.
Martin Wollmer is a German painter of Expressive Realism, born in Cologne in 1939. He is particularly known for his vibrant, colorful works, which are often associated with the CORBA artists' group. From 1954 to 1957, he apprenticed with the Cologne church painter Windelschmidt. Wollmer studied intermittently in Cologne between 1952 and 1963. From 1964, he initially worked as a church painter in the Lower Rhine region and furthered his studies in Amsterdam from 1964 to 1965. In 1968, he returned to Cologne and established himself as a freelance artist with his own studio near his hometown.
His oeuvre comprises an estimated 10,000 oil paintings, which are represented in private collections worldwide. He is considered a "painter without borders," who, in addition to Abstract Expressionism, also incorporates influences from Tachisme and classical modernism. Besides abstract compositions, his portfolio also includes figurative works, such as portraits (e.g., of Jimi Hendrix) and religious scenes (e.g., the Crucifixion of Christ). His works are regularly traded at auction houses. Wollmer exhibited extensively internationally.
