About the artist:
Maurits Cornelis (Mauk) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden. He achieved fame with his woodcuts, wood engravings, and lithographs, in which he often played with mathematical principles. He signed his work MCE. In his work, he often played with impossible constructions, studies of infinity, and interlocking geometric patterns (plane divisions) that gradually transform into completely different forms. In the 1950s, he gained wider recognition as an artist, particularly in the United States. He died on March 27, 1972, in Hilversum at the age of 73.

About the work:

A 1950 wood engraving by M.C. Escher titled "Devils." This copy is a New Year's greeting for 1959, likely addressed to his friend and fellow artist Hans van Dokkum (this work was part of a collection of New Year's greetings by Hans van Dokkum). It features Escher's handwritten text: "A Happy New Year 1959 by 4 Barinese Eschers." Escher likely saw the figures he used for this work in Bari, Italy (Escher lived in Italy for a time and also traveled extensively there). This engraving is signed "MCE" in the lower right corner of the print. This work was assessed by Willem de Winter (owner of the art dealership EJ van Wisselingh & Co); see the attached photo.
