It was not until 1979 that the beautiful purple variant was found in South Africa, after which it was granted gemstone status. Sugilite officially became a rare gemstone in 1980. Subsequently, other deposits of this mineral have been found. However, these can be counted on one hand, and Sugilite remains classified as an uncommon mineral. The color of Sugilite is determined by the presence of manganese. The color can vary from deep pink and purple to blue and everything in between. The mineral is often found in combination with chalcedony or quartz, creating beautiful color combinations. This is also the case with these polished tumbled stones.
