Perignem - Beautiful large relief Mother with Child - Rogier Vandeweghe - Sold

Large and expressive ceramic wall relief with a stylized depiction of Mary and the child Jesus.

The elongated composition depicts Mary placing her hands protectively on the child's shoulders. The sculpture is executed in polychrome earthenware, featuring a characteristic combination of matte, rough surfaces and glossy glaze accents in light blue, cream, black, and deep red. The red halo and the finely modeled faces and hair, in particular, give the work a strong and recognizable mid-century character.

Based on design, use of materials, glazes, and previous cataloguery, the wall sculpture is attributed to the Belgian ceramics studio Perignem in Beernem. Perignem was founded by the brothers Rogier and Laurent Vandeweghe and grew into one of the most important Flemish ceramics studios of the post-war period. They primarily worked in a folk-traditional decoration style of Joost Maréchal. In addition to Roger Vandeweghe and his wife, the sculptors Cyriel Maertens and Jaak Van de Vijver were also commissioned to design the sculptures. A specific designer for this model could not be determined with certainty.
