This painting is a classic example of Peter Brouwer's recognizable, impressionistic floral still lifes. He is known for his lush bouquets with thick, impasto brushstrokes and vibrant use of color. The large yellow and pink roses take center stage in this work. His characteristic signature is located in the lower left corner of the canvas.
Petrus Antonius Hermanus (Peter) Brouwer (1935–2010) was a beloved Dutch painter known as the "painter of direct colors." He attended the Evening Academy in Utrecht but was also primarily mentored by his uncle, Piet Brouwer, a teacher at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. In addition, he worked closely for many years with the renowned painter John Bévort. Although he learned much from Bévort, Brouwer developed a style entirely his own, featuring brighter and bolder colors. When Bévort passed away in 1996, Brouwer struggled greatly; subsequently, he moved with his wife to Sneek in 1997, where he died in 2010.
Peter Brouwer's trademark was creating depth and structure using the impasto technique, in which he applied oil paint thickly, impasto, and with a firm touch to the canvas. He drew strong inspiration from his extensive study trips to Italy and Spain, which gave his work a warm, sunny atmosphere and a Mediterranean light. He became best known for his flower still lifes, but also painted cityscapes and village views, beach and seascapes, and forest and natural landscapes.
Brouwer was a member of 'The International Organization of Free Art'. His paintings were in high demand among the general public. This was partly because his art was accessible and optimistic, but also because his work was published on a large scale as high-quality reproductions, which sold by the thousands. In addition, he exhibited successfully abroad, including in Germany and New York.
Even today, his work remains popular with many people, and his paintings sell readily. His flower still lifes, in particular, are beloved for the thick impasto technique and the bright, vivid colors.
