Peter Donkersloot (born April 8, 1959, in Arnhem) is a well-known contemporary Dutch painter who is particularly famous for his expressive, colorful portraits of cultural icons and his distinctive layered painting technique. In addition to his successful career on canvas, he opened his own gallery and, more recently, emerged as a writer.
Peter Donkersloot grew up in the nature-rich surroundings of the Veluwe and spent a significant part of his youth in the Betuwe. This Dutch landscape, with its waterways and characteristic Dutch skies, later served as a major source of inspiration for his early landscape works. The creative craft was instilled in him from an early age; his father, Piet Donkersloot, was also a well-known illustrator.

He developed a highly recognizable style in which pop culture and classical painting meet. Donkersloot paints using a traditional 'layer-over-layer' technique. Instead of slow-drying oil paint, he uses fast-drying water-based acrylic paint. With this, he builds up his canvases with thick, expressive layers of paint. A unique element of his working method is the integration of screen prints (serigraphs) or giclées by old masters, which he subsequently partially or completely overpaints to transform them into a modern, new work of art.
