Oil painting by Peter Keizer, with metal edges attached to the canvas. Note that these are slightly bent.
Peter Keizer's work is characterized by simple, reduced forms, coarse materials, and large areas of color. His paintings are often monochromatic and constructed from thick layers of oil paint, applied directly from the tube with a palette knife. These impasto layers give the work an almost sculptural quality, with interlocking color structures that enhance the image's physical presence.
Keizer's work is simultaneously monumental and slightly absurd. He creates a world dominated by positive emotions, populated by flowers, trees, mountain landscapes, and animals. These motifs are closely linked to childhood memories, which have been transformed over time into idealized, colorful images. Emotion and personal experience are essential driving forces in his artistry.
Not the composition, but the object itself is central: reduced to its most elemental, almost archaic form. Keizer's work invites the viewer to a direct, uninhibited way of looking, rooted in wonder and sensory experience.
