Pierre Jules Mêne is considered one of the pioneers of animal sculpture in the 19th century. He created animal sculptures, primarily of domestic animals such as horses, cows and bulls, sheep and goats, which were fashionable during the Second Empire. He belonged to a school of French animalières that also included Rosa Bonheur, Paul-Edouard Delabrierre, Pierre Louis Rouillard, Antoine-Louis Barye, his son Alfred, son-in-law Auguste Caïn, and François Pompon.
