================================================

Petrus Martinus Antonius de Zwart (The Hague, February 29, 1880 – The Hague, November 24, 1967) was a Dutch painter. He was the younger brother of the painter Willem de Zwart (1862–1931). Although trained as a carpenter, he followed his brother, eighteen years his senior, in his artistic career. When he was awarded a scholarship around the age of twenty by the patron and art collector Abraham Bredius, he was able to attend the Hague Academy of Fine Arts. In his early years, his relationship with his brother was complex, partly because Willem went through a mental crisis in 1906/1907. Thus, while he initially received private lessons from Willem alongside his classes at the academy, he was later assigned Cornelis Koppenol (Kees, 1865–1946). In 1908, he received the Vrouwe Vigelius Encouragement Prize at the academy. After completing his academy years, he was active as an independent visual artist in The Hague and the surrounding area until his death in 1967. In the autumn of 1915, he registered as a member of the Haagse Kunstkring. Pieter de Zwart's subjects were landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Shaped by teachers who were still influenced by the Hague School, he remained indebted to 'Hague Impressionism'.
