Reinier Kamphuis (Amsterdam, 1951) After secondary school, he initially devoted himself to cello and piano studies, but in 1978 decided to focus entirely on painting. He is self-taught and took private lessons for several years. He is an admirer of the German Expressionists of the early 20th century. He is also inspired by the abstracted and sun-drenched landscapes of the colorist Wim Oepts. Reinier works with acrylic, gouache, and oil paint on various supports. For his work, he starts from photographs, small sketches, and memories; these serve as the basis for a painting or gouache. His paintings are not representations of reality but of his experience of that landscape, still life, flowers, or interior. The colors, applied with bold brushstrokes, provide his own unique interpretation. Composition and the use of color are important, but subordinate to the spontaneity of the painting. Light and shadow provide the accents in the work. In the landscapes, the skies and reflections in the water lend depth to the image. His work is figurative but also possesses a certain degree of abstraction. His studio is a converted stable in the polder landscape near Amersfoort. It stands amidst the expansive depictions of nature. Hares run in the distance, clouds drift overhead. Heavy machinery is being used to excavate the groundwork for the Flood Channel on the Veluwe, between Veessen and Wapenveld. Kamphuis frequently captures his vision of this in paintings.
