Robert Vande Velde (Sint-Niklaas, July 24, 1895 - Ostend, 1978) was a Belgian art deco stone sculptor and a designer of medals. Vande Velde was born as the son of the Sint-Niklas marble and stonemason Carolus Ludovicus vande Velde-Van Steenlant, his younger brother Lucien Van de Velde (1910-1997), also became a well-known artist. He learned the trade from his father and perfected himself at the local academy with Jozef Horenbant.[2] During his youth, he developed a deep friendship with priest-sculptor August Nobels, who encouraged him to carve religious themes, which matched his admiration for Gothic sculpture.[2] During the war he completed his education at the Antwerp academy, just like his frame painter Leo Engels (1882 - 1952), who portrayed him in 1929 -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -
