Countervail: "Everything is opposite, yet a careful harmony exists in a place where space and time merge seamlessly. As the divers explore the improbable atmosphere around them, the shepherd and the astronauts watch each other casually as the sheep slowly emerge from their stony sleep."

Robert Vanderhorst's paintings depict a world in which psychological, social, and material processes are closely intertwined. Although figurative, his work typically rejects static pictorial spaces and linear narratives. Instead, a cumulative, serial, or recombinant approach emerges in much of his work. The resulting visual language is alternately familiar and alienated, direct and mediated, traditional and unconventional. Subjects are played out, floating in an imaginary environment that creates an implicit tension within the painting. Vanderhorst's environments are both transformative and in the process of transformation, constantly on the edge of becoming something else.

The work is too large and too fragile to ship, so please pick it up.
