Interesting work by Sven Hoekstra.
From the portfolio "Mask for a Bald Head." Numbered and signed in pencil by the artist at the lower left.
For quite some time now, he's been lying there listening to the commotion on the street. He doesn't find the sound unpleasant.
The air outside is still pale.
He'd opened his eyes briefly. Several things in his room had disturbed him: a note with an appointment, a magazine opened to a random page, an empty glass.
Last night he smoked too much. He wonders how that happened. At dusk, he'd had a conversation with the neighbor. It was about her son growing up to be a victim of the gallows.
His head is heavy. Something bites behind his eyes.
Outside, several cars start at the same time.
He stands up and drinks a few glasses of water.
What number is it today? The calendar hangs next to the sink. He once put a sticker of a political party on the mirror. He lights a cigarette. He has a lot to do today. He takes a few drags and puts it out on the windowsill, a gesture that announces action. Upstairs, the daily piano exercises begin, the sweet sound of which cheers him up. On the radio, the news, events, battles are being waged in the deserts.
He decides to postpone breakfast. Perhaps later in town, on a covered terrace.
He looks out the window.
