Due to the resemblance of Hock's alter ego to the characters in the works of the Italian writer Sandro Veronesi, many of Veronesi's books translated into Dutch are illustrated with a work by Hock. The novel *Zeldzame Aarden*, released in the Netherlands in 2015, featured a work by Hock on the cover that strongly resembles the work offered here. The cover was based on an original from 1997 (see photos).
The original upon which the artwork offered here is based dates from 2013 and hangs in the auditorium of Tilburg University: https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/nl/over/historie-en-academisch-erfgoed/kunst-op-de-campus/teun-hocks
The history of the creation of this work can also be seen on Hocks' website (scroll down): https://teunhocks.nl/work-in-commission/

--------------------------------------------- Teun Hocks (Leiden, June 10, 1947)
Teun Hocks enjoys creating his own world. In it, he is the main character, always trapped in an absurdist setting. His working method is fixed: first painting the background, then photographing himself in the relevant landscape using a self-timer, and finally further editing that photo with oil paint or digitally coloring it.
The atmosphere in Hock’s works is seemingly lighthearted; upon closer inspection, however, all sorts of things turn out to be wrong. For example, the artist follows his own footsteps in the snow, cleans up a starry sky with a dustpan and brush, or finds himself outside on a bed in striped pajamas for unknown reasons.
Above all, Hocks wants to tell a story. His paintings are about 'a man who just keeps going'. Not a lucky man, but not someone who is deeply unhappy either. A bit of a loser, an outsider, an office clerk in a suit from C&A. 'I am not him, but I am playing him.' He loves acting, and in this way, he can direct himself. 'I can do that better than directing someone else. Then I would be afraid of making a fool of that person. The way I look, surely I can't do that to anyone?'
After purchase, an artwork can always be collected, but by appointment, in Diemen (near Amsterdam, a few minutes from the A10 ring road). The collection period is very generous; you can optionally collect the work weeks or even months later and, if possible, combine it with a visit to (the area around) Amsterdam for other matters. In that case, you will, of course, save on shipping costs. The only exception to the above is that if the seller at any time decides to ship the work free of charge, this is binding, i.e., the work cannot be collected in that case. This will only happen in exceptional cases and the buyer will not bear any financial risk.
