Tilly Moes Poppies..

Tilly Moes was the pseudonym for Sofia (Fia) Theordora van Driel, born in 1899 in Düsseldorf to Johannes Gerardus van Driel and Sophia Adriana van Lammeren. Until her marriage to the artist Nicolaas Bruijnesteijn, she lived with her parents in The Hague, where she attended the drawing academy. During her premarital period (until 1927), she painted "antique" still lifes: intricate, dark works with abundant fruit and flowers under the pseudonym "Tilly Moes." However, she also held an office job to earn her living.

She married in 1927 in The Hague and moved to the Gooi region shortly thereafter. Until 1939, she moved frequently, primarily within the Gooi and the Vecht region: Blaricum, Laren, Eemnes, Vreeland, and Kortenhoef. However, she also stayed in Driebergen, Overveen, Oisterwijk, Antwerp, and Romania. She was (and remains) a popular painter, and during the Depression, she earned her living exclusively by painting, still under her pseudonym Tilly Moes. Her sunflowers and poppies, in particular, were box-office successes. With the increasing prosperity after World War II, clients seemed to automatically register. From 1953 to 1963, her circle of influence changed: almost all of her work disappeared abroad. She died in Arnhem shortly after her 80th birthday.
