Vera Pouw - The Sparrow

"Mus" (The Sparrow) – Original Expressive Abstract Painting by Acclaimed Dutch Artist Vera Pouw (1956–2021) Bring a captivating piece of authentic European contemporary art into your home. Titled "Mus" (The Sparrow), this striking original artwork by the revered Utrecht-based artist Vera Pouw is a powerful exploration of nature, movement, and texturing. At first glance a mesmerizing abstract, the painting masterfully reveals the dynamic silhouette of a sparrow nestled in thick brush. Dominated by earthy ochres, deep sandy tones, and rich browns, the piece is sharply punctuated by lines of pale cream, vibrant yellow accents, and a dramatic midnight-blue background that gives the composition incredible depth. The hallmark of this painting is its extraordinary tactile quality. Pouw was celebrated for creating a "skin-like" surface—sculpting heavy impasto layers of acrylic and mixed media, then using palette knives to carve, score, and scrape into the canvas. This creates a beautifully scarred, organic topography that changes with the light in your room. Vera Pouw (1956–2021) was one of the most resilient and profound creative forces in the Netherlands. Her long, courageous battle with multiple sclerosis heavily influenced her artistic philosophy, turning her textured canvases into reflections of life's vulnerability, raw beauty, and strength. Following her passing in 2021, her legacy achieved widespread acclaim with major retrospective exhibitions across prestigious Dutch venues, including the KuuB Art Space and the historic Dom Church (Domkerk) in Utrecht. With a dedicated monograph book published and an active municipal movement to name a street after her in Utrecht, owning a piece by Vera Pouw is a meaningful artistic investment.
