  • Victor Maria Charles Joseph de Buck was born in Bruges on August 14, 1855. De Buck studied painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Afterwards, he traveled extensively throughout Europe. Via Tuscany, Madrid, and Germany, among other places, he ended up in Bladel. The impoverished rural life there inspired him. He advised his friend Gindra to settle in Bladel with his family.
  • The photographs that De Buck took of the farming population near Bladel around 1886 are particularly remarkable. They are the oldest surviving photographs of Brabant rural life and perhaps also the only ones taken during that period. He took these photos to serve as models for his paintings and those of Gindra. The collection is housed in the Regional Historical Centre in Eindhoven. De Buck photographed people outdoors, working in the fields, and in and around their simple mud houses. Like Van Gogh, De Buck romanticized unspoiled folk life. He preferred to depict rural inhabitants who still lived in an old-fashioned way. With his 'photographic camera,' he set out to photograph farmers in the fields. Their goal was to capture these scenes in an unforced manner. He accepted that the technical quality suffered as a result. Many similarities can be pointed out between De Buck's photographs as a photographer and the drawings and paintings of Vincent van Gogh from his Brabant period. He often adopted the same viewpoints, took an interest in the same details, and had a preference for working people or those at rest, tired from hard labor. De Buck was an eccentric figure who often walked through the village shrouded in a black cape. He frequently stayed with the Gindra family, and when they moved into the new house on Sniederslaan (then Hapertseweg), De Buck also rented several rooms there. When Gindra fell into financial difficulties, the house was sold to De Buck in 1913. It soon became apparent that De Buck was unable to pay his mortgage; in fact, he had vanished without a trace. The house was sold to a real estate agent, who sold it back to Gindra, who was able to dispose of De Buck's inheritance. It is an open secret in Bladel that the painter was murdered by Gindra and is buried in his own backyard. When human remains were found by the gardener after the Second World War, this suspicion was confirmed once again. The legend of the haunted house was born.
