Willem Visser - Pancake plant in red pot

Willem Visser trained at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts (now called the Willem de Kooning Academy) from 1974 to 1979. Between 1979 and 2002 he regularly exhibited landscapes and cityscapes in the Netherlands and Belgium. He was particularly interested in the polder landscape at that time. His work is in private and public collections at home and abroad. The subject of this painting is the pancake plant. The pancake plant is a plant from the nettle family, originally from China. They have strikingly large round leaves and fleshy stems. The leaves have a diameter of about 10 cm and are slightly off-center on the petiole. Visser himself about the plants and the painting: ' They are a feast for the painter's eye. When the sun shines in the living room in the morning, it looks very festive. Especially when sunlight shines through the leaves, causing them to turn bright green, with shadows, cast shadows and bright areas of light. In other words, this painting was a little fun to paint.
