Berenice ABBOTT (Springfield 1898 – Monson 1991)
Berenice Abbott was a photographer who initially studied sculpture in New York, Paris, and Berlin. In Paris, she focused on portrait photography and photographed artists and writers. After her return to New York, she focused on the changing city, paying attention to architecture, streets, and the contrast between old buildings and new skyscrapers. Her work belongs to documentary photography and is characterized by a direct, sharp depiction of reality. In addition, she took scientific photographs that made physical phenomena visible. She also played an important role in preserving and publicizing the photographic work of Eugène Atget.
