Christian Paul DAMSTUÉ (Arnhem 1944)
From 1962 to 1970, Damsté studied successively at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 's-Hertogenbosch and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He taught from 1972 to 2005 at the art academies in The Hague, Arnhem and Amersfoort. In 1987 and 1989 he was a guest teacher at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. He lives and works in Arnhem.
Getting acquainted with Damsté's work means being overwhelmed. With countless etchings, lithographs and serigraphs, many sculptures and objects, with countless drawings, watercolors and paintings, his oeuvre takes many forms.
Characteristic in all his work is the often strict arrangement of visual elements and the use of diverse materials. Order and rhythm. Rhythm is created by alternating defined volumes and the contours provide a spatial drawing.
Damsté lives and works in Arnhem. His work is included in various collections, including: the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, the Frans Masereel Center in Kasterlee and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. He has also taught at the Free Academy, The Hague, Staatliche Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf and the Arnhem Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
